Why Is VoIP Good For Small Business?

The 5A8most immediate benefit of VoIP for most businesses is savings on long distance charges. Companies equipped for VoIP can place long-distance calls over the Internet rather than the PSTN and avoid paying long distance charges. Since most companies already pay for broadband Internet connections, the only additional requirement is the equipment that connects telephones to the IP network.

The so called "VoIP revolution" in telecommunications can benefit many consumers. The group who stands to gain the most....if they're smart...are small businesses.

In addition to the cost savings, bringing voice and data together on one network opens the door to new services. Advanced conferencing, unified e-mail and voicemail messaging and dialing calls by selecting from a computer contact list are just a few of the new service possibilities.

The benefits of VoIP can go beyond free long distance calling and new services. Because VoIP integrates voice calling with the IP network, small businesses of the future will only need one network to operate, rather than separate telephone and computer networks. A single integrated network is cheaper to install and maintain, and there would only be one network service bill to pay. We recommend Packet8 service for small businesses of today.....and tomorrow.

But fully converged networks are a long way off for most small companies. Today, traditional PSTN telephony is still crucial fo536r the vast majority of small businesses. Since most of the telephone calls for the majority of small businesses come from local callers using the traditional telephone network, small businesses need to maintain their traditional PSTN links. For those small business where VoIP doesn't make sense yet we recommend using a "Best Rate Calculator" to optimize your PSTN usage and cost effectiveness.

Top 5 VOIP Threats In 2007 & How To Safeguard From Them

This article is mainly discussing possible voip threats to users & providers in 2007 and in coming years.

1) Inter-Company Toll Frauds: Where an outsider and an employee of a VOIP company get together and run a Toll-free VOIP business but charges the customers. Providers get 0 money since the employee routes all the call from provider's phone and outsider uses a toll-free to connect to the employee.

2) Message Interception: A user can intercept the message sent t5A8o another user and track your SIP No. & other information.

3) Enumerating: Sending direct random information to registrar servers to find information about other registered users.

4) DOS Attacks: Denial of service attacks using proxies and manipulated header info.

5) Virus/Worms: Last but not the least. Worms and Virus will be on the loose in VOIP space in future.

So beware, its time to tighten the security and go extra step further to do our best to save ourself from such attacks.

For home users, we could follow some simple guidelines to avid such attacks if not 100% they can still be effective.

1) If you are home VOIP user, don't get calls from anyone (stranger), Don't accept a call not from your contacts. Instead try to chat with him first before starting a call to verify his identity.

2) Use secure VOIP clients which can sit on top of your favorite VOIP clients. Zfone is one such application which can encrypt your call.

3) Update your antivirus software regularly. if you do it religiously, most of the virus & worms wont harm you.

Hope this article helps you keep the hackers out.

VOIP is Good, But

VOIP the new Internet phone stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol. What this means, is you use your broadband internet connection to make phone calls. Sounds really good, especiall5A8y since it has free long distance and its only $25 a month. But there are 2 major drawbacks.

911 Service doesnt work like a landline phone. In some areas, it doesnt work at all. There are severe risks to consumers thinking 911 can save them in an emergency, but the internet phone doesnt work that way. Be careful or review your plan to make sure you understand how the 911 service works. The FCC has been on these companies to straighten this out or inform consumers of the risks.

The 2nd problem seems minor compared to the above, but I dont like being tied to my PC when making a call, even if Im wearing a headset. www.ipero.com makes a real cool $30 phone that plugs into my USB and works like a regular phone. Its lightweight has a mute and speed dial, and the sound is great. Its compact and I can take it on the road with me. Many VOIP phones only work with PCs, but this one works with a Mac, too.

There are still some concerns with VOIP technology, but once the companies get around them, the consumers will have a great product. Besides, at $25 a month, you can overlook a lot of issues.

VOIP Internet Telephony

VOIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol. It is another name for Internet telephony and often known as VOIP Internet telepAC0hony. VOIP refers to a process in which audio conversations are routed over the Internet. In case of traditional telephones, voice data flows over circuit-switched transmission lines. But in case of VOIP, this data flows over a packet-switched network.

Those protocols, which carry voice signals over the IP network, are known as VOIP protocols. VOIP costs less than a traditional telephone. One of the reasons for this could be the utilization of a single network for carrying voice as well as data. Networks which remain underutilized can use VOIP without incurring any additional cost. It lets you make lots of long-distance calls without paying any additional amount.

There are certain advantages of VOIP Internet telephony over traditional phones. One of the major advantages is that your calls can be routed to your VOIP phone wherever you are. Just get your VOIP phone connected to the Internet and you can get all the important calls you might have missed if you were using a traditional or a cellular phone.

However, quality is still an issue as far as this technology is concerned. This is because of the probability that your data packages might not be delivered in a particular sequence. There have been efforts to address this issue, and the results have been positive. The VOIP Internet telephony market got a major boost after broadband and Internet access providers started marketing them.

They are offering subscribers opportunities to make and receive large numbers of calls through VOIP Internet telephony by connecting an analog telephone adapter (ATA) to the Internet connection. Many companies are offering unlimited calls to certain destinations without incurring any additional cost.

What is VOIP?

Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) also known as IP telephony is technology that provides telephone service over the Internet. VOIP transforms voice signals from a telephone or computer microphone into small data packets, 5A8and then sends them over the Internet.

VOIP debuted in 1995 as a networking service similar to a chat room but with microphones and headsets. The first kind of service was computer to computer communication. Consumers were attracted to VOIP because it was a great way to avoid long distance fees. Two callers using the same service could talk to each other for free anywhere in the world. In the past few years, VOIP service providers have enhanced the technology to include telephone to telephone calling just like a land line (analog) telephone service.

The adapter for telephone to telephone service is small enough to allow VOIP service to be portable as long as there is access to a high-speed Internet connection. To better understand VOIP technology, it helps to describe how analog telephone service works compared to the Internet.

Analog Telephone Service
When an analog telephone call is connected, a circuit on a telephone line is opened and remains open throughout the connection while a stream of voice signals travels over the line. (Wilson) If tens of thousands of circuits are open at the same time over one telephone line it can become crowded and affect the speed and quality of the connection. A dial-up Internet connection uses a telephone line to transfer data but it is much slower and less efficient than a high-speed broadband or DSL Internet connection, which uses a separate line.

Th5A8e Internet
The Internet uses a line with much more space (bandwidth) available than analog telephone lines. Cable television and the Internet can use the same line because television signals and Internet data are compressed into data packets that take up little space.

When a data packet is sent over the Internet, a circuit is opened, the packet is sent, and then it closes. The other end of the circuit only opens when the packet reaches its destination. This process requires less bandwidth and the line doesn't become crowded, which translates into a more efficient, high-speed transfer of data.

Required Equipment
All VOIP services require a high-speed Internet connection (dial-up does not work). Most providers will use any Internet service; however, some require their customers to use their Internet service. For computer to computer communication a headset and microphone (built-in or separate) and computer are required; and for telephone to telephone service only a telephone adapter and a telephone are required.

Savings
VOIP service is popular among consumers because of the over-all cost savings compared to analog telephone services. Most VOIP services offer the same (if not more) features as analog telephone services at a lower price and long distance calls between users of the same service are usually free.

Many VOIP providers advertise their service as a replacement t5A7o analog telephone service. However, consumers should know that if their Internet service is disrupted or the power goes out, VOIP will not work and not all VOIP providers are equipped to handle 911 calls.

Practical VoIP at Long Last

If you thought you finally had a handle on the VoIP phenomenon, think again. The virtual pho5A8ne line established with VoIP has been taken to the next level, the virtual call center. With the continuous stream of new possibilities opening up as a result of ever-improving VoIP technology, it was only a matter of time before someone came up with the idea of a virtual call center. Well, not only have they come up with it, they've made and marketed it, too. And as someone who spends a lot of time writing about VoIP, all I can say is that it's about time.

It's called the VirtualOne, and they are a company called GotVMail, specializing in (you guessed it) Vmail services.

So what is it? GotVMail advertises VirtualOne as a virtual PBX. If you're not up on your telephony terminology, that's short for private branch exchange the internal phone system generally used by larger companies that allows for multiple lines, mailboxes, transfers, etc... VirtualOne is a platform geared toward smaller businesses that need the functionality of a hardwired PBX or call center but don't have the resources to merit such a substantial investment.

VirtualOne allows a small company to present a unified front to callers, even if its employees are scattered across the globe. It's remarkable in that's it's cheap, portable, largely customizable, and very flexible in terms of both pricing and functionality.

This is not intended to be a sales pitch, but rather a source of information for intereste5A8d parties, so with that in mind, let's dispense with the pleasantries and get to the meat of it the features.

VirtualOne furnishes a company with a toll free telephone number accessible anywhere in North America and/or a local number for international use. Callers are greeted with a custom-made main greeting which lists extensions for departments, individuals' mailboxes, etc... Callers are then transferred to the appropriate destination which, thanks to the virtual bit, can be anywhere in the world, and any kind of telephone number office, home, or cell. In conjunction with live call transfer, this means that a salesperson in Winnipeg can transfer to an accountant in sunny SoCal as if he or she were down the hall. It supports a limitless number of calls to avoid leaving callers with a busy signal, and plays canned waiting-on-the-line music between transfers. Using live call forwarding and what they call a dial by name directory VirtualOne forwards calls to wherever your employees may roam, as if they were sitting behind a desk.

If the appropriate party cannot be reached, there is of course voicemail unlimited capacity voicemail to be exact. Mailboxes can be designated to any purpose, and each employee can check his/or her mailbox via phone or online. In conjunction with myGotVMail, voicemail messages and faxes can even be automatically forwarded to email as audio and visual attachm5A8ents, letting employees stay in touch anywhere.

Call announcing lets employees easily screen calls. They are able to hear the caller's name and the mailbox from which they are calling from before choosing to accept the call. The system can also instantly transfer the caller, ask if you want to accept the call, or it send callers directly to voicemail.

There are a host of other features(some optional at extra cost) such as after-hours greetings, automated caller Q&A scripting(letting the system ask callers for basic information), rotational mailboxes, offsite backup, and even professional voice talents for your greetings.

But perhaps the most impressive thing is this: no hardware or software is required to setup or use VirtualOne. None. VirtualOne lets your company have a highly efficient call center and PBX even if you don't have a physical location, which can really be a boon for a small business.

And now, the numbers. How much does this beauty cost? Surprisingly little, actually, which is the other draw for the small business community. GotVMail offers three package deals with varying options the Standard, Advanced, and Premier Local packages. A brief comparison follows.

The Standard package is(unsurprisingly) the most basic and the cheapest. It's $9.95 a month base rate. The Advanced runs $19.95 a month for a little more functionality. The main difference is in th572e number of mailboxes you get: the standard only comes with 5, while the advanced gets you 10. A few other optional features(Dial-by-Name Directory, Virtual Marketing Extensions, Virtual Fax) come at an extra premium to Standard package users but are included at a discount in the Advanced fee.

The most robust package is the Local Premier, which at $39.95 a month is still very inexpensive and includes a virtual local number in addition to the toll free number (Note that for all packages toll free service is an additional variable per-minute charge). The Premier package also comes with 20 mailboxes total and more optional services than the Advanced at no extra cost. Additional mailboxes can be purchased for any plan (for a nominal fee, of course), and some optional features, such as rotational mailboxes, cost extra under every plan. The deciding factor will probably be the size of your business for the most part.

So, if you're a small business-person looking for an affordable and easy solution to your communications problem, this really does look like a great option. High efficiency, no special hardware or software, and let's face it dirty, dirty cheap. This is what VoIP is all about.

Globalization Consequences on Cultural Studies

It is fair to say that the impact of globalization in the cultural sphere has, most generally, been viewed in a pessimistic light. Typically, it has been associated with the destruction of cultural identities, victims of the accelerating encroachment of a homogenized, westernized, consumer culture. This view, the constituency for which extends from (some) academics to anti-globalization activists (Shepard and Hayduk 2002), tends to interpret globalization as a seamless extension of indeed, as a euphemism for western cultural imperialism. In the discussion which follows I want to approach this claim with a good deal of skepticism.

Postmodern culture, the politics of post-structuralism and the influence of globalization on identity are topics that have received much critical attention and have given rise to complex debates. Whether in the field of cultural and media studies, (post)colonial discourse analysis or aesthetics, these discussions are often perceived as being extremely complicated, confusing or removed from everyday reality. The subject of postmodernism is no longer restricted to learned debates by intellectual elites: Its appearance in mass media discussions concerning topics as diverse as architecture, drama, fashion, literature, music or film has become almost a daily occurrence. The importance of debates on the cultural impact of television is self-eviden5A8t in the light of television being "an asset open to virtually everybody in modern industrialized societies and one which is increasing its visibility across the planet" (Barker, The Cultural impact of television, 3).

The Cultural Studies in a Global Context fosters cross-disciplinary research and teaching among social sciences and humanities scholars, focusing on the complexities of increasing globalization and intercultural contact. These changes have stimulated both formal and informal dialogues and collaborations among faculty, graduate students, professors of departments, and programs. Recently their works have focused on environmental issues in postcolonial contexts; empire, masculinity and gender; ethnic and religious violence; migration and diasporas as it currently occurs in the face of accelerating globalization and from a historical perspective; theories of cultural hybridity and interculturality in the context of asymmetrical power relations; and geopolitical and other kinds of borders where differences of all kinds cause peoples to clash and intermingle.

Two powerful scenarios dominate the public discourse about the cultural consequences of globalization. The one very common scenario represents globalization as cultural homogenization (for example Benjamin Barbers McWorld vs. Jihad). In this scenario the culturally distinct societies of the world are being overrun by globally available goods, media, 5A8ideas and institutions. In a world where people from Vienna to Sidney eat Big Macs, wear Benetton clothes, watch MTV or CNN, talk about human rights and work on their IBM computers cultural characteristics are endangered. As these commodities and ideas are mostly of western origin, globalization is perceived as westernization in disguise. The other scenario is that of cultural fragmentation and intercultural conflict (Huntingtons Clash of civilizations and most recently "confirmed" by the ethnocide in Yugoslavia).

But can we really reduce the processes of cultural globalization (i.e. the process of world-wide interconnections) to these two stereotypes? What about the meaning that local people attach to globally distributed goods and ideas? Why do people drink Coca Cola and what sense do they make of the soap-operas they watch? Do they really trade in their century old life worlds for the kinds of Madonna and Bill Gates? And how does the homogenization scenario fit with its rival, the imminent cultural fragmentation? (Joana Breidenbach and Ina Zukrigl).

Global and local analysis is inseparability. Global forces enter into local situations and global relations are articulated through local events, identities, and cultures; it includes studies of a wide range of cultural forms including sports, poetry, pedagogy ecology, dance, cities. The new global and translocal cultures and identities created by the diasporic 5A8processes of colonialism and decolonization. Cultural studies consider a variety of local, national, and transnational contexts with particular attention to race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality as categories that force us to rethink globalization itself.

It is very important how local and particular discourses are being transformed by new discourses of globalization and transnationalism, as used both by government and business and in critical academic discourse. Unlike other studies that have focused on the politics and economics of globalization, cultural studies, today, articulating the Global and the Local highlights the importance of culture and provides models for a cultural studies that addresses globalization and the dialectic of local and global forces.

Globalization leads to a new cultural diversity. Culture is one of the most prominent global concepts and gets appropriated in highly diverse ways. From its origins, cultural studies have defined its interdisciplinary impulse as a necessity derived from the nature of its object of study. Stuart Hall locates the origin of cultural studies in the refusal to allow "culture" to be distinguished from the social and historical totality of human practices, as exemplified by the refusal of cultural studies to acknowledge the autonomy of high art from mass or popular culture, or the autonomy of cultural artifacts from practices of reception and consumption in ev5A8eryday life. Thus globality leads to the emergence of new cultural forms - a process points out that everywhere cultural tradition mix and create new practices and worldviews.

One of the key questions in globalized cultural studies is whether we have now entered a new moment in the institutionalization of cultural studies and interdisciplinary work more generally. Cultural studies also have a long history of skepticism and self-critique directed at its own institutionalization. Typically, the way cultural studies seeks to make its methodologies mirror the "totalizing" nature of its object is cited as a defense against reductive institutional codification along disciplinary lines, which it is feared will not only reduce cultural studies to a formula but also eliminate the interdisciplinary forms of dialogue, collaboration, and critique of disciplinary limits that have informed the history of this movement. The logic of epistemological mobility and boundary-crossing that cultural studies shares with its definition of culture is supposed to provide an inherent resistance to disciplinary formation, the traditional mode of academic legitimating. The interdisciplinary logic of cultural studies makes possible an alternative mode of institutionalization, so that Stuart Hall distinguishes "institutionalization," as a positive process, from the dangers of "codification." On one level, what a cultural studies program institut5A8ionalizes is its own skepticism toward institutionalization as a discipline.

Gateway and Integrator - The Essential Catalysts for the VoIP Evolution

Compelling businesses cases are hard to come by. Quality and security is the subject of FUD. Perhaps most importantly, those enterprises that are forward thinking enough to appreciate the operational benefits of IP, have quite recently implemented advanced TDM solutions that are bridged with their contact management systems. These investments still have a distance to travel before they can be written off.

Nevertheless, the perceived industry wisdom supported by analyst predictions and all the research data recently collected points toward the day when all enterprises will implement a VoIP solution. The argument for a single network infrastructure to carry all company data voice, data and video - is logical and compelling. The savings available from bypassing the line rental and call costs of PSTN can run into millions per annum in certain circumstances. The technology is proven to work out of the box and daily we read about (and implement) innovat5A8ions that raise the bar of the quality and certainty of VoIP to the point where it is indiscernible from that provided by the PSTN.

The reality is that no transport technology ever replaced another over night be that technology to carry people, goods or electrically generated signals. (Stevensons Rocket first carried rail passengers in the UK 1829. The last operational stagecoach in the UK - Minehead to Lynton - plied its trade in 1926.) Transport technologies evolve and have always relied on a handover point, or a gateway, to provide the user with the benefits of both old and new at the most appropriate point. That point is determined by cost, as are most evolutions in human endeavour. By the same argument, the VoIP gateway is an essential element of the evolution from traditional TDM voice systems to VoIP solutions.

Hardware manufactures, the PBX companies notable among them, depend on new product lines to guarantee their futures. In line with industry wisdom and predictions, the next range of PBX product is a VoIP solution with the essential PSTN gateway that beg the customers to make the big leap to VoIP. Yet as we have seen, there are some significant barriers to this leap. Therefore, the reseller channel has to look at ways to enable the leap and to sustain revenue streams while their customers sum up the courage to make it.

This is the role of the independent VoIP gateway. It enabl5A8es a blend of VoIP and traditional telephony on a single implementation and with VegaStreams advanced dial planner capability; the user experience will not change at all. The gateway enables enterprises to leverage their investment in inter-site private IP networks to carry voice without changing their current phone systems. The gateway enables remote workers to directly connect over the ubiquitous broadband IP network to the company PBX system. And with the co-deployment of Proxy servers, the gateway enables road warriors to be in the office wherever they can connect their SIP devices to the Internet.

Earlier in this piece it was mentioned that VoIP technology is proven to work out of the box. This is the case in the show room; on the exhibition floor and in the controlled environment of the enterprise WAN. However real world implementations involve third party PBXs and desk top devices (and the myriad of TDM signalling protocols deployed), the specific technologies of wide area bearer circuits, SIP or H323 IP protocols, interface and access to PSTN for emergency service calls (as a minimum) and a real understanding of the needs and business drivers of the customer. This is the domain of the specialist communications systems integrator.

VegaStream has spent the last eight years perfecting VoIP gateway technology in the lab and with enterprise and carrier customers. While we continue to evo555lve new solutions to tackle issues such as security and audio quality and to build the stack of signalling protocol interfaces, the company is now focussing its energy on transferring skills to specialist communications systems integrators. These skills will enable identification, proposal and successful implementation of blended TDM and VoIP solutions the essential catalyst for the evolution to the next generation of converged communications.

VOIP: Innovation In Telecommunications!

VOIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol. It is an innovative way to talk with others around the world. VOIP has done amazing things for phone conversations and telephone conferences that take place with companies in other countries. The connection is so clear you wont believe how far away the other party is.

The VOIP process uses the internet connection to route phone calls. In addition to offering the highest clarify in your calls, you will find the cost to be much less than normal long distance services. For those who make a lot of calls outside of their area code, this is a great savings. In fact, the service allows many long distance calls to be billed as local calls instead.

The VOIP is a great option for those on the go for business or leisure. You can get incoming calls anywhere you can get an internet connection. As more internet ports are being added all the time to various locations, the VOIP will soon be usable everywhere you can image.

One disadvantage of the VOIP system is that is wont operate during a power outage, and that may be a time when you need it for emergency calls. Some VOIP systems are offering a backup battery for this type of situation.

The VOIP phones offer various payment plans to fit your phone use needs. The VOIP pr561e-paid phone card is very popular. While this is not an actual phone, it allows the user to make the same affordable calls, from anywhere in the world - right from their computer. The pre-paid phone card is a great product for those working or traveling in another country.

It is believed the VOIP will soon replace many home phones and cell phones. An individual will use their VOIP for both. This is because the cost will be less and the service will be better.
